2020 - 2022

Over the decades, 2 West Michigan Avenue has lived multiple lives after its auto industry past: a World War II dance hall, a Moose Lodge, an antique and salvage store, and more. Each establishment added to its character.

Before purchasing the building, the owner spent years listening to musicians, artists, community members, and local business owners. Their voices echoed strikingly similar needs:

2022 - 2025

Following the purchase, the next 3 years focused on securing grants, assembling teams, and planning the renovation. Key milestones included these Grant achievements:

• EGLE Brownfield Redevelopment Grant
• Downriver Community Conference Brownfield Consortium USEPA Assessment Grant
• Washtenaw County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Environmental Assessment Grant

In 2025, grant funding translated into action. Hazardous materials were removed from inside 2 West, and interior demolition revealed the building’s original bones: brick, concrete, steel, and glass, which had not been seen in decades.

2026 and beyond

At its core, the role of 2 West is one of stewardship. Its vision is to preserve this historic landmark while inviting the community to breathe new life into it.

The building's future is rooted in creating a vibrant ecosystem for the music and arts, while strengthening ties to with Ypsilanti's biking and riverfront communities. Together, these communities will spark new vitality in Downtown Ypsilanti.

Renovations will continue through 2025 and into 2026. Leasing discussions are now open for arts and music organizations ready to join 2 West’s vision.
